Modeling Search Behavior in Heterogenous Environments

چکیده
A large part of today’s information retrieval studies focuses on modeling user search behavior to improve search algorithms, evaluate their quality and simulate users. Most of previous research on user modeling considers homogeneous search environments, where search devices, users, their search tasks and corresponding search results are assumed to be uniform. However, real-world search environments are highly heterogeneous. In this position paper, we elaborate on heterogeneous search environments and outline challenges in user modeling that arise in this case, e.g., the availability of rich user feedback and the need of device-specific and cross-device models. We also set up an agenda for research on user modeling in heterogeneous search environments, which includes acquisition of user interaction data, development of advanced user models and application-oriented evaluation of these models.

An Ensemble Click Model for Web Document Ranking
Annually, web search engine providers spend more and more money on documents ranking in search engines result pages (SERP). Click models provide advantageous information for ranking documents in SERPs through modeling interactions among users and search engines. Here, three modules are employed to create a hybrid click model; the first module is a PGM-based click model, the second module in a d...
متن کاملApplication of Hazard Based Model for Housing Location Based on Travel Distance to Work
Residential location choice modeling is one of the areas in transportation planning that attempts to examine households location search behavior incorporating their trade-offs between housing quality, prices or rents, distance to work and other key factors. This brings up the need to come up with methods to logically allocate credible choice alternatives for individuals. This article attempts to...
متن کاملSensing and decision-making in random search.
Many organisms locate resources in environments in which sensory signals are rare, noisy, and lack directional information. Recent studies of search in such environments model search behavior using random walks (e.g., Lévy walks) that match empirical movement distributions. We extend this modeling approach to include searcher responses to noisy sensory data. We explore the consequences of incor...

Enterprise search technology retrieves digital objects and internally generated content within organizations. Unlike other retrieval environments, enterprise search is a community of practice which responds to expected activity at similar times. Collective mind theory (Weick & Roberts, 2003) is similar to retrieval environments where the unplanned movements of multiple people move towards a sim...
متن کاملAn effective and versatile keyword search engine on heterogenous data sources
We present EASE, an effective and versatile keyword search engine that enables users to easily access the heterogenous data composed of unstructured, semi-structured and structured data, without the need of learning XPath/XQuery or SQL languages. EASE addresses a challenge in keyword search that has been neglected in the literature: how to efficiently and adaptively process keyword queries on t...
